Crossing Currents Exhibition

Future Cultures: Lucy Lucy + Katira

‘Crossing Currents’ is a collaborative exhibition by Future Cultures, the Naarm/Melbourne-based artist collective formed by Katherine Gailer (Katira, COL) and Lucy Desbordes (Lucy Lucy, FR). The immersive exhibition brings together large-scale paintings, installations, motion graphics, and live performances to extend their ongoing cross-cultural dialogue.

Merging voices from disparate cultures, the artists offer unique yet cohesive perspectives on the contemporary weaving cultures, identity, and modernity. Their collaborative works become a meeting point for dialogue, shared vision, and co-creation. It unfolds as a dynamic space where heritage and transformation intersect.

Infused with Latin American iconography, Katira’s vibrant compositions offer a glimpse into a world of magical realism. Her portal-like paintings are rooted in nature and community. Steeped in symbolism and mythology, her vivid artworks open a doorway into ancestry and cultural memory. Lucy’s work blends French folklore with contemporary global and Australian aesthetics to explore culture and the power of diversity. Her pieces deconstruct clichés of French identity, presenting instead a vision of her heritage shaped by diasporic narratives and cultural hybridity.

Reflecting on the complex history of the Australian story, they imagine new modes of connection across cultures and peoples, one that pays respect to country and story, where heritage and transformation intersect. As two evolving women from disparate cultures, they envision an equitable future that fosters agency through shared creation and feminine empowerment.
