The story of Gelam the dugong – MKW
29 April, 2021, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
An evening of Torres Strait Islander food, song and stories hosted by Mabu Mabu.
Enjoy a series of dishes inspired by the story of Gelam that takes you on a journey from land to sea and back again.
The dishes recreate the creation story of Dauar and Waier, Islands off the coast of Mer Island in the Torres Strait. Each course will link to different chapters in the story with a focus on fresh seafood, native meats, and Islander flavours featuring native ingredients from across Australia. As you dine, enjoy live music from First Nations performers and gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the significant role of storytelling in Indigenous knowledge systems.
The event is hosted by Mabu Mabu owner and head chef Nornie Bero, who grew up on Moa where the story begins, and is a Meriam woman of Mer Island where the story ends.
This meal is a reflection of the food culture of the Torres Strait. Due to the nature of the event there will be no vegetarian or vegan options and some dietary requirements may not be available. Please email hello@mabumabu.com.au prior to booking for any menu enquiries.
