SUMMARY:GARABARI by Joel Bray Dance
DESCRIPTION:Garabari flips the usual theatre experience into an all-in dance gathering. Created with Wiradjuri Elders and community\, it shares the Giilang – the story and song of how the Murrumbidgee River came to life. \nWiradjuri song and Byron Scullin’s driving electronic beats set the pace. Denni Francisco’s striking designs and Katie Sfetkidis’ immersive lighting turn the space into a vibrant dance floor. Audiences are invited to join the performers in call and response and simple movement\, building to a collective finale full of energy and connection\, a state of ecstasy. \nFirst Nations people have long used dance and song to share knowledge and bring people together. Garabari carries this practice forward\, showing how stories and language continue to live and evolve. Step onto the floor\, feel the bass\, and be part of a shared celebration of people and Country. \n“An enlivening experience that celebrates our earth\, our first peoples and everyone else in the freest way imaginable” — Limelight Magazine \n  \nMidsumma is Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation\, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists\, performers\, communities and audiences. \nMidsumma Festival 2026 will open on Sunday 18 January and run to Sunday 8 February 2026. \nCheck out the full 2026 program here. \nFind out what’s on at Meat Market.

SUMMARY:PiaNu-Metal
DESCRIPTION:Revisit rock’s most dismissed genre\, with a classically-trained pianist\nRevisit rock’s most dismissed genre. The white boy dreadlocks\, the rampant sexism\, the suburban angst\, the chain wallets. Reminisce about the highs and lows of the late 90s and early 2000s than through the lens of a classically-trained pianist\, vocalist\, music history buff\, and boylesque dancer. \nWith artful arrangements that showcase the melodies beneath the distortion\, Piano Punk plays some of your most favourite (and perhaps least favourite) Nu-metal songs and takes you back to simpler times when the economy was downturned\, the USA was bombing people in the middle east\, and baggy pants were popular. So pretty similar to now\, in some ways. \nWhat can we learn from this fever dream of a genre that celebrated hyper-masculinity? Did we really do it all for the nookie?

SUMMARY:Reflections of a Decaying World
DESCRIPTION:Seeing ourselves in nature: Reflections of a Decaying World\nWhat if seeing ourselves intrinsically entwined with nature encouraged us to reverse the effects of climate destruction? “Reflections of a Decaying World” uses Teague Leigh’s landscape photography as the heart of deconstructed disco balls. The mirror pieces on top of the landscapes reflect the viewer\, drawing them into the work. This artwork asks the viewer to see themselves as part of a world in decline and take action to stop the rot. \nTeague uses several colours of mirror to celebrate the spectrum found in nature while also reflecting his rainbow community and the pivotal role they play in making change happen. The mirror balls – a nod to LGBTQIA+ dance culture – are deteriorating\, like the Earth. This suggests it is time to stop playing and start working on reversing climate change. \nOpening: Wednesday 28 January 6-8pm\nExhibition: 28 – 30 January 5-10pm | 31 Jan 4-10pm \nMidsumma is Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation\, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists\, performers\, communities and audiences. \nMidsumma Festival 2026 will open on Sunday 18 January and run to Sunday 8 February 2026. \nCheck out the full 2026 program here. \nFind out what’s on at Meat Market.

SUMMARY:Magical Prescriptions
DESCRIPTION:Tell the “Doctor” what ails you.\nCome to me\, “Dr” Jessica Ngaio Smith\, with something that troubles you. Whether physical\, psychological\, spiritual or emotional\, tell me about your problem and I’ll write you a prescription. Appointments are one-on-one and you’ll have 10 minutes to speak. If your words get stuck in your throat\, that’s ok\, I’ll work with what I see in the stillness and silence. \nMagical Prescriptions is an experiment in making ritualistic performance art that is intimate and personalised\, giving the audience an experience that is just for them. As someone who has felt greatly dehumanised by my experiences as a patient in the doctor’s office\, hospital ward and psychologist’s room\, I am interrogating the notion that healing can be given to us by a stranger working in institutionalised paradigms with a strict time limit. As an artist\, I have a curiosity and hope that art\, along with a reverence for the beautiful mystery of things\, might help guide us back towards ourselves. Finally\, as a clown\, I feel it’s my duty to laugh at how little I\, or anyone\, can truly have the answers to anything. \n  \nMidsumma is Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation\, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists\, performers\, communities and audiences. \nMidsumma Festival 2026 will open on Sunday 18 January and run to Sunday 8 February 2026. \nCheck out the full 2026 program here. \nFind out what’s on at Meat Market.

SUMMARY:Hot & Heavy
DESCRIPTION:The future is Hot\, the conversation is Heavy\n\nThe Ironing Maidens are a multi-arts performance project based in Gimuy (Cairns)\, QLD. They shape their practice through queer feminist and posthuman frameworks. Combining electronic music\, projection\, movement\, humour\, and live performance\, they create works that reimagine the everyday and open space for playful\, critical\, and speculative futures. Their previous projects include Electro House Wife\, A Soap Opera\, and their latest work\, Hot & Heavy. Since their debut\, The Ironing Maidens have toured nationally and internationally for more than a decade\, performing at Splendour in the Grass\, Fusion Festival (Germany)\, the Berlin Performance Art Festival\, and even in laundromats across regional Queensland and New South Wales. \nHot & Heavy continues their ongoing exploration of sound\, domesticity\, and performance. Part installation\, part performance\, and part dance-floor uprising\, Hot & Heavy imagines non-binary\, de-capitalised\, and post-extractive futures through speculative fabulation. The show delivers an immersive aural\, visual\, and sensory experience that invites audiences to lose themselves\, dive deep\, and shake free. Within this queer new world\, they transform the familiar terrain of domestic life: they hack and reimagine appliances\, reframe the horror of human production lines and capitalist consumption\, and turn the dance floor into a site of protest\, pleasure\, and collective power. \nAudiences enter a landscape of projected and augmented interiors where immersive sound design\, performance art\, aerial movement\, dance\, and live electronic music converge. The iconic ironing board band pulses at the core of a night that provokes thought\, entertains wildly\, and engages deeply. Performers and spectators blur together\, swept up in the swell of bodies moving en masse\, driven by the unifying beat of a broken-down washing machine in the search for utopia. \n\n  \nMidsumma is Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation\, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists\, performers\, communities and audiences. \nMidsumma Festival 2026 will open on Sunday 18 January and run to Sunday 8 February 2026. \nCheck out the full 2026 program here. \nFind out what’s on at Meat Market.

SUMMARY:State of Play by Christopher Bryant
DESCRIPTION:A magical journey to dispel our deep-seated fear of a fallible mind and body\n“Anything can disable us at any time\, sugar: don’t make it weird.” – Blanche DuBois\, alcoholic sad girl and neurodivergent icon. \nUsing pop culture\, queer theory\, and theatre history to explore queer disability\, State of Play asks audiences to question their assumptions about the way queer and disabled people live their lives. Flickering between a performance lecture interrogating the classical representations of queerness and disability we’re used to\, and allowing these characters to take the stage themselves\, State of Play builds four walls around the audience before slowly deconstructing the spectator-performer divide. The audience are invited to join Bryant onstage and take part in centering their own joy: through confession\, through dance\, physical contact\, and artistic creation. \nAnything can happen at any time: a car might hit you while you cross the road or a blood vessel may burst in your brain while you sleep. Even so\, we have to keep on living: ideally from a place of joy and curiosity. What happens when you realise the disabled people you pity every day not only don’t want your pity\, but in fact totally reject it? What happens when you realise that we have rich and full lives not in spite of our disabilities\, but because of them? \nMidsumma is Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation\, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists\, performers\, communities and audiences. \nMidsumma Festival 2026 will open on Sunday 18 January and run to Sunday 8 February 2026. \nCheck out the full 2026 program here. \nFind out what’s on at Meat Market.

SUMMARY:Crossing Currents Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:‘Crossing Currents’ is a collaborative exhibition by Future Cultures\, the Naarm/Melbourne-based artist collective formed by Katherine Gailer (Katira\, COL) and Lucy Desbordes (Lucy Lucy\, FR). The immersive exhibition brings together large-scale paintings\, installations\, motion graphics\, and live performances to extend their ongoing cross-cultural dialogue. \nMerging voices from disparate cultures\, the artists offer unique yet cohesive perspectives on the contemporary weaving cultures\, identity\, and modernity. Their collaborative works become a meeting point for dialogue\, shared vision\, and co-creation. It unfolds as a dynamic space where heritage and transformation intersect. \nInfused with Latin American iconography\, Katira’s vibrant compositions offer a glimpse into a world of magical realism. Her portal-like paintings are rooted in nature and community. Steeped in symbolism and mythology\, her vivid artworks open a doorway into ancestry and cultural memory. Lucy’s work blends French folklore with contemporary global and Australian aesthetics to explore culture and the power of diversity. Her pieces deconstruct clichés of French identity\, presenting instead a vision of her heritage shaped by diasporic narratives and cultural hybridity. \nReflecting on the complex history of the Australian story\, they imagine new modes of connection across cultures and peoples\, one that pays respect to country and story\, where heritage and transformation intersect. As two evolving women from disparate cultures\, they envision an equitable future that fosters agency through shared creation and feminine empowerment. \nEvent Dates\nExhibition Runs: 6 Nov – 30 Nov 2025\nOpening Night: Thu 6 Nov\, 6 – 9pm\nPerformance Night Event: Fri 14 Nov\, 6 – 8.30pm \nExhibition Opening Hours:\nWed to Sun: 11am – 5pm\nMon & Tue: Closed

SUMMARY:Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:Opera Up Close. Horror Up Closer.\nAward-winning indie company BK Opera returns this November with a chilling\, immersive take on Verdi’s Macbeth – a psychological horror experience that puts the audience within arm’s reach of ambition\, madness\, and murder. Staged inside the historic Kensington Town Hall\, the production transforms the venue into a decomposing dinner party – decadent\, deranged\, and deeply unsettling. \nDirector Kate Millett (OperaChaser Best Director 2024) leads a powerhouse creative team and cast\, all of whom bring serious acclaim to the table. Millett’s vision for this Macbeth is intimate and unrelenting: “This is opera that doesn’t just touch you – it consumes you.” \nWhat the Critics Say About BK Opera: \n“Millett is never short of fresh ideas in her quest to reinforce opera with an edge… she creates an unsettling claustrophobic tension that traps the audience.” Herald Sun\, 2018 \n“This is experimental opera uncommon to an Australian stage.” ArtsHub\, 2019 \n“Incorporating daring ideas on a shoestring budget… Millett has persevered through the years while applying a fresh inquiry into operatic works and proving to be a vital\, alternative voice for the art form locally.” Australian Arts Review\, 2024 \n“Millett does not stint on the seriousness of the drama\, providing no easy answers to the disturbing mystery.” Man in Chair\, 2022 \n“Inescapably gripping.” OperaChaser\, 2017 \nDiscover more events on at Meat Market and Kensington Town Hall

SUMMARY:No Seasons
DESCRIPTION:A new work about transness\, disability\, and the ethics of IVF.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘No Seasons’ is a new experimental work by Oliver Ayres (‘I’m Ready To Talk Now’ – Best Experimental\, Change Maker Award) exploring gender\, IVF\, disability\, and parenthood.\n\n“When I was nineteen years old\, I had my eggs frozen before I started taking hormones – and prior to my diagnosis with a rare and chronic immune condition. Almost ten years later\, and what seemed like a hypothetical future is slowly becoming my reality – but what is my ethical responsibility in bringing children into this world? And if I choose not to use my eggs to have my own children\, can I live with myself if I donate them to other families\, knowing that one day they may search for their biological mother – and find their father instead.”\n\nEach audience member will be asked to choose from three options before entering the theatre: ‘I am a parent/step-parent/guardian etc.’\, ‘I am not\, but I may be someday’ and ‘I am not and I never will be’.\n\nOliver is also a finalist for the 2025 Trans Visibility Awards in Creative Excellence presented by Transgender Victoria.\n\nPraise for Oliver: ★★★★★ “An intense moment of intimacy and openness…this immersive experience cements Ayres as a forward thinking creative to watch.” – TimeOut\n★★★★ “Calls for more compassion between us all while exemplifying what this can look like in practice” – The Scotsman\n★★★★ “A gentle\, radical kind of care” – Fest Mag ★★★★ “Disarmingly intimate and unavoidably involving” -The Arts Desk
