Have you ever wonder what goes into running a building like Meat Market? With over 350 bookings in and out of the building each year, Meat Market is place of fast paced action with a variety of options to keep both patrons and the workers on their toes.
One of the warm voices you’ll hear on the phone, around the office and in the space is Emma Devereux, Meat Market’s Venue Manager who oversees our small team to ensure work is delivered efficiently and quickly – Emma took a break to share some insights, and tidbits on the day-to-day, and mission of Meat Market.
Emma! What was the road that led you to Meat Market?
A round-about one! I’ve always worked in customer service roles and my education was in visual arts so I have always had a passion for the creative industries. Following some time in the UK working as the touring exhibition manager for a science center I returned to Melbourne and after a stint with Westside Circus, I started working at Arts House in 2011. In 2015 when Meat Market separated from Arts House and became a dedicated venue for hire, I moved here and became the Presenter Services Coordinator. In 2016 I stepped into the Venue Manager role. So I’ve been blessed to work with this amazing building for nearly eight years… and I’ve loved every minute.
What does a day in the life of Acting Venue Manager, Emma Devereux, look like?
Honestly, it’s different every day – that’s one of the wonderful things about Meat Market. In addition to the hirable spaces, a number of arts organizations call Meat Market’s offices home, so there’s a bit of tenancy management to be done as well. We’re a small team so there’s a very hands-on approach to everyone’s role. In a typical day for me there are budgets to be managed, events to be delivered and also maintenance and improvement projects happening. It’s a pretty busy workplace but we make sure we share jokes and the occasional office-cake.
How would you describe Meat Market – in 3 words?
Beautiful, Alive, Creative.
And what does Meat Market strive to do? What makes it different to every other venue around Melbourne?
Meat Market’s vision statement is to support new and emerging arts. It’s such a wonderful place to work and we are so lucky to be able to assist artists in achieving their vision. I’m privileged to work with an amazing team of people who share a love of making artists dreams into realities.
We know a mother loves all her children equally . . . but, what are some of your favourite events or fondest memories at Meat Market?
Meat Market is home to around 350 bookings per year so there have been many wonderful events here but for me personally, a real highlight was the MTV unplugged performance by Gang of Youths in August of last year. Yirramboi Festival has had two amazing opening night parties here which have been among the most fun nights in the venue for me. It would also be fair to say that some of my fondest memories are of crossing the pavilions on quiet mornings, as the sunbeams fill the space.
Quick! Friends are visiting and we need to DAZZLE them! Where are we having coffee first, what are we doing in the day, and how do we top off a perfect Melbourne evening?
For a great coffee you can’t go past Code Black just around the corner. Then we’ll head through town, stopping in Centre Place for a cheap and cheerful lunch before wandering around our beautiful city. If the weather is fine, a stop in at Rooftop is a must to take in our amazing city skyline at sunset followed by dinner somewhere in town. Where would depend on the friend’s taste in food but with this many awesome restaurants I’m sure we’ll be able to find something delicious.
And finally – what are you looking forward to that’s coming up?
I love independent theatre so I’m really excited about the upcoming season of Disparate Scenes for Millennial Dreams. We also have a wonderful offering planned during Melbourne Fringe so keep an eye on our what’s on page for details.
